Marion is nestled in the foothills of Western North Carolina, surrounded by the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. The continental divide is located to the West, about 15 miles from Marion. Black Mountain, a charming town, and Asheville, which is known as a small cosmopolitan city with a bohemian flair, both make the short trip across the divide worthwhile.
Skiing and other fun wintertime activities are only a short drive to the North, where Boone and Blowing Rock offer up shopping and art and sightseeing as well. To the East, you'll find the shopping mecca of Hickory, as well as its smaller version, Morganton. And to the South is Rutherford County and Shelby.
With bypasses and highways dissecting Marion and leading to all of these destinations and more, Marion has become the gateway for many tourists who travel every year to the beautiful North Carolina mountains. Lake James, one of the most popular lakes in North Carolina, runs through Marion. Parts of The Last of the Mohicans were filmed here. This small but growing town has become a second home for many who have vacation homes in the area.
